Youth Services Statistics

The Library of Virginia annual collects information from the Virginia Public Libraries through Bibliostat Collect or Bibliostat. The date to be reported is for the fiscal year that has just ended. The fiscal year is July 1 to June 30. Below is the information gathered through Bibliostat related to Children’s and Youth Services.

Collections

Number of Volumes – Young Adult Print Books

Enter the number of print books volumes in the young adult collection.  Title is a publications that forms a separate bibliographic whole, whether issued on one or several volumes.  Volumes is a physical unite of any printed, typewritten, handwritten, mimeographed, or processed work, contained in one binding or portfolio, hardbound or paperbound, which has been cataloged classified, and/or made ready for use.  An encyclopedia may be one title and several volumes.

Number of preschool programs

A preschool program is any planned event which introduces young children to any of the broad ranges of library services or activities or which directly provides information to participants.  Programs may cover use of the library, library services, or library tours.  Programs may also provided cultural, recreational or educational information, often designated to meet specific social needs.  Exclude programs sponsored by other groups that use the library facilities.  If programs are offered as a series, count each program in the series.  For example, a baby sign language series offered once a week for six weeks should be counted as six programs.

Number of attendee at preschool programs

Enter the total number of persons attending all programs for which the primary audience is preschool children both those held at the library and those held at other locations.  Include adults, young adults, and children who attend programs primarily for preschool children

Number of children’s programs ages 6-11

A children’s program is any planned event for which the primary audience is children and which introduces the group of children attending to any of the broad range of library services or activities for children or which directly provides information to participants.  Children’s programs may cover use of the library, library services, or library tours.  children’s programs may also provide cultural, recreational, or education information, often designed to meet a specific social need. Examples of these types of programs include story hours and summer reading events.  count all children’s programs, whether held on- or off-site that are sponsored or co-sponsored by the library.  Do not include children’s programs sponsored by other groups that use library facilities.  If children’s programs are offered as a series, count each program in the series.  For example, a story hour offered once a week, 48 weeks a year, should be counted as 48 programs.  Exclude library activities for children delivered on a one-to-one basis, rather than to a group, such as one-to-one literacy tutoring, services to homebound, homework assistance and mentoring activities.  This figure is a subset of the Total Number of Library Programs.

Number of young adults ages 12-18 programs

A program is any planned event which introduces teens attending to any of the broad ranges of library services or activities or which directly provides information to participants.  Programs may cover use of the library, library services, or library tours.  Programs may also provided cultural, recreational or educational information, often designated to meet specific social needs.  Exclude programs sponsored by other groups that use the library facilities.  If programs are offered as a series, count each program in the series. For example, a film series offered once a week for eight weeks should be counted as eight programs.

Note: Exclude library activities delivered on a one-to-one basis, rather than to a group, such as one-to-one literacy tutoring, services to homebound, resume writing assistance, homework assistance and mentoring activities.

Enter the total number of persons attending all programs for which the primary audience is young adults both those held in the library and those held at another location.  Include children and adults who attend programs primarily for young adults.
