Early Literacy

Online Family Literacy Calendar  English ℘ Spanish
Librarians across Virginia play a part in helping children be ready to learn when they enter school.  Virginia libraries provide services and programs as well as resources and access to information that helps prepare children for school.  Yet, it is the parent or caring adult that has the biggest influence on a child’s development.  This website was developed to assist parents and caring adults looking for fun activities to help children be ready to learn when they enter school, find health and wellness information or find a fun family community activity.

Early Literacy Poster – With the assistance of Saroj Ghoting, early literacy consultant, the Library of Virginia graphics arts department created an early literacy poster which reflects the research and principles outlined in second edition of Every Child Ready to Read®

School Readiness – “School readiness” describes the capabilities of children, their families, schools, and communities that will best promote student success in kindergarten and beyond. Each component – children, families, schools and communities – plays an essential role in the development of school readiness. No one component can stand on its own.”  – Virginia Department of Education

Every Child Ready to Read® is an initiative of the Associations for Library Services to Children and the Public Library Associations, divisions of the American Library Association
